My favorite childhood story
As a child growing up my mom would read to me every night and my favorite book she read over and over was Hooper Humperdink..? Not Him! As a child growing up we all experience some type of growing pains of not being invited to a party or being teased because we are diffferent...but this story changed it all for me. Hooper Humperdink was a story of humanity in which a young child couldn't come to the party becuase he was not like the others....I always asked my mom over and over "Why are they so mean to Hooper, don't they see he is sad?" My mom would always reply the same "Not every one in this world knows how special different is, you will see Hooper will change their minds." In the end Hooper always changed their minds. A simple bedtime story that I thought was a special moment with my mom, became a life lesson that its okay to be different. A story I have passed along to my children.

You have a GREAT Blog! I think I would enjoy this book as well. Lots of times kids just don't understand how children can be so mean. Books like this force our children to actually see he things in the world going on around them.
ReplyDeleteThanks Katrina! I really love children's book espically Dr. Seuss he teaches a message in the most mysterious ways that a child can relate too...I saw your book a Fly Went By, but was not able to post. I remember that book vaguely but your detals make me recall the courage of the fly at the end that we all can conquer anything including our fears.
DeleteMichelle,
ReplyDeleteThis book is one that I am not familiar with. I enjoyed hearing about its meaning. But truthfully, I am impressed at your mother's insight and guidance. As a mother of four, I know how important it is to read to your children every night. I was truly touched on how important the ritual was to you, and your relationship with your Mom. There is nothing better then the feeling of connecting to your own children. My children are grown, my oldest is 22 and my youngest is 16. My hope is that one day they too will read to their children and be able to take away what I have instilled within them, as you have taken away the wonders of what your mother instilled within you.
Thanks Millie, my mom is a great women and proved it to us by puttin her career on hold for the first 7 years of my me and my brother's life before returning back to nursing. I read to my daughter every night and read to both of my boys when they were younger....it's the best time of my life and like you I hope they read to their children and reflect back on the difference I made in their life just by reading.
